Our client owned two properties with century-old barns. He wanted a rustic home, so he decided to repurpose the barns' wooden beams. So, we took those beams and turned them into a high-end, sustainable home.
After consulting with the client, we hired an architect to ensure the project was feasible. Then, we specified the beams and documented a detailed plan for contracting.
When homeowners recycle their timber, they typically find bug infestations. So, after the architect wrote out the load capacities, we painstakingly fumigated the wood. Then, we modified the beams on-site to fit the architectural drawings.
We used the beams for the house frame and interior finishings.

The Kitchen: Blending the Old with the New
At the homeowner’s request, we contrasted farmhouse-inspired black pendant lights with a white kitchen. The white marble backsplash, shiplap and cabinetry, black lights, and stainless-steel appliances blend modern living with a historic aesthetic.
The centerpiece is a substantial custom-built island with plenty of storage space and a marble countertop. Just around the corner from the kitchen is a tile-floored walk-in food prep pantry with custom cabinetry, countertops, and a barn door to hide away that extra storage space!
The exposed restored wood-beam frame ceiling and custom cedar-shake hood over the oven carry on the rustic theme.
The Glass and Tile Shower Bathroom

Remember the reclaimed wood? Some of the beams frame the white shiplap walls of the living room and dining room. It’s an open, inviting space with dark wood floors and black framed windows and doors. You could both entertain and lounge in the rays of the sun beams shining through floor to ceiling windows in this room.

Surrounded by windows on the main floor, the staircase has a wonderful mix of textures: white shiplap, reclaimed wood framing, shiny black railing, and a unique throwback pendant light overhanging it all.

Take Inspiration from the Double Loft and Bedroom
The reclaimed wood went a long way! It makes up the timber-framed walls and the high-beam ceiling of the large, spacious bedroom loft. Even more wood shows up on the floors.
The bedroom has a vintage design with wood floors, timber and shiplap walls, barnwood ceiling, and white farmhouse pendant lighting.
A large custom built-in armoire features abundant drawers and cabinets. It keeps the neutral color scheme going and conveniently replaces the need for a closet.
A Farmhouse Rustic Bathroom
The atmosphere is simple and welcoming, with wood-beam walls, floors, and ceiling. The free-standing tub is just waiting for a soak. The black tile floor contrasts with the white freestanding tub, simplicity at its most beautiful.
The Finished Basement
The basement is full of natural elements with a stone wall and wood floor. We scribed shiplap to the stone wall, adding eye-catching texture to the room. Instead of pendant lights, we switched to recessed lighting.
